Fairuz on Radio MAQAM® with host Bashar Barazi - راديو مقام راديو فيروز - محطة الإذاعة العربية
The legend of today is yesterday's shy little village girl; the
superstar acclaimed by millions as magical, brilliant, and angelic is
the one and only Fairuz. Born and raised in Lebanon, Fairuz began her musical career as
a teenager. From chorus girl at the Lebanese radio station in the
late 1940s, to critical and popular acclaim since the 1950s,
Fairuz is acknowledged not only for her musical talent and contribution,
but also as a cultural and political icon. A symbol of a people,
a heritage, a quest for peace, and of humanity.
Today Radio MAQAM® celebrates a living legend, an artist above all others, and an icon admired and respected the world over on the occasion of her birthday (November 21).
Fairuz, along with the Rahbani Brothers, changed the landscape
of modern Arabic music. Her velvety voice along with their innovation
created a legacy that is musical, literary, nationalistic, cultural,
and political. The Baalbeck stage launched its brightest
star and became the site for the complex musical expressions that Fairuz
would deliver through many theatrical plays. These plays reflected
the modernization of Lebanon, its folkloric heritage, and the political
landscape of the time intertwined with the softer themes of nostalgic
village life, unrequited love, and memories of times past. Fairuz's
theatrical performances have become unparalleled time capsules that
embody a historical heritage and a cultural renaissance, as well as
a wealth of musical innovation.
From all of us at Radio MAQAM®: Happy Birthday Fairuz!
